Dass Flo Ridas ‘Whistle’ gewisse Ähnlichkeiten mit Eagle Eye Cherrys ‘Save tonight’ hat, fällt schnell auf und liegt wohl hauptsächlich an den Gitarrenparts. Beide Tracks einmal als A+B Mashup zu kombinieren, ist die logische Folgerung: Save my Whistle Tonight!

Today we’re gonna have a closer look at the internationally successful Dutch producer and DJ Joeysuki. Since 2006 this guy has provided us with fresh high-quality house tunes from Amsterdam. Now, 6 years later, his tracks like ‘Dig it all (ft. Hardwell)‘ or ‘Hidden Sound‘ go around the world and so does Joeysuki himself: he has toured through South Africa, Indonesia and Europe and there’s surely more to come.
Famous DJs like Laidback Luke, Steve Aoki, Thomas Gold and many others keep supporting Joeysukis tracks and underline the reputation Joeysuki has in the international music scene.
His latest release is called ‘Kiwistick’ and is about to hit the global clubbing scene. On that occasion he also agreed to face the questions I had for him about his life and career. So there it is, a Interview with Joeysuki:
1. Maezmusic: Do you still remember your first gig? What was it like?
Joeysuki: Yes I still remember! I was nervous as hell, it was in a little cafe in my hometown with a maximum capicity of 200 persons. I had to play the whole night and was scared that I didn’t had enough music haha. At the end it was an amazing experience!
2. M: Your last release is called ‘Kiwistick’ what’s the story behind that name? And who gave you the release-cake?
J: Well here’s the short story. I had a fruitbowl with a USB stick in it but there we’re some old kiwi’s laying in there aswell which were rotten on the stick! On that stick were a few drafts of never ended projects of mine. And the stick also included the theme of Kiwistick! I got the cake of a friend of mine which helps me with my marketing, just to celebrate the succes! How nice? 
3. M: You’ve produced some tracks with Hardwell and Firebeatz, do you guys also hang out together?
J: Yes they are good friends of mine. I think it’s important that you have a strong connection with eachother to make good music!
4. M: The music you play in your DJ-sets mainly is dutch electro and similar stuff, but what kind of music do you like in private?
J: Well I listen to all kinds of music. It depends in what mood i’m in. I can listen to opera, hiphop, reggea and the list goes on, but I definatly listen to house music the most.
5. M: What is the best thing about your job?
J: Doing what I like the most, every single day!!
6. M: What would be your job if you weren’t doing what you actually do?
J: Ehm.. good one! I guess I wouldbe studying for a ‘normal’ job. I never knew what I wanted to become untill I found out about house music!
7. M: You update facebook a lot and twitter every other time, has social media become more important than playing live in order to recruit a strong fan-base?
J: I think it’s important to have a strong connection with my fanbase because they are the people who support you and make it possible for me to live like this. Via social media I get to know what they wanna hear, what they like or don’t like and sometimes I want to do something back for them. I just gave away a free download of a new bootleg of mine to show my respect and say thank you. I guess social media has become a very important thing of this business but nothing can beat a good live performance which will you will remember a life time.
8. M: What do you think about mashups – crime or cream?
J: No, it’s a great thing! You will get a diverse vision of 1 track which makes it possible for several DJ’s to play it in there sets. It’s cool to see so many people being creative!
9. M: You’ve been touring through South-Africa back in 2010, where will you go next?
J: Where my music takes me! I’ve already been back to South Africa again and also did a tour in Indonesia. That’s also a great thing about this job, you can see a lot of the world and meet a lot of new people and you never know where you’ll end up next week haha.
10. M: Finally what is you special tip for all those upcoming producers out there?
J: Keep on having faith in what you do! My opinion is that GOOD music will always find it’s way to the right spot. Sometimes it can take longer than you might hope but keep having faith and things will end good. I know it’s a hard path you have to walk on but faith will lead you to the top!

Pegel und Mixing:
Das Arrangement ist jetzt abgeschlossen, nun geht es darum, noch etwas am Klang des Mashups zu feilen. Schon vorher wurde der Bassanteil einer Spur stark reduziert, um matschige Klänge zu vermeiden. An Stellen, an denen sich zwei laute Abschnitte der vermixten Songs überlagern, klingt das Ergebnis aber trotzdem noch nicht sauber. Das liegt daran, dass die einzelnen Spuren zu laut sind und der Finalmix deshalb “übersteuert”. Reaper zeigt das damit an, dass der Pegel in den roten Bereich aussschlägt:
die roten Pegel signalisieren ein Übersteuern, sowohl auf Spur 1 als auch im Master
Um diesem Problem zu begegnen, wird die Lautstärke der einzelnen Spuren und des Mastermixes reduziert. So übersteuert das Signal nicht mehr und im Mix hört man kein Knacken mehr.

Natürlich reduzieren solche Eingriffe die Homogenität und Gesamtlautstärke des Mixes. Diesem Problem tritt man mit einem Masterlimiter entgegen. Der Masterlimiter reduziert besonders laute Stellen im Mix und macht leise Stellen lauter, um so letztendlich die Gesamtlautstärke anheben zu können. Dieser Eingriff hat nicht zu unterschätzende Auswirkungen auf die Dynamik des Songs, sollte also mit Bedacht eingesetzt werden und mit den verfügbaren Parametern spielen. Es ergibt sich ein gleichmäßig lautes Signal:

Natürlich handelt es sich hierbei nicht um ein vollständiges oder vollwertiges Mastering, aber das würde hier zu weit führen. Der Track ist, so wie er ist, auf jeden Fall präsentabel. Done! Und so klingt Numb Love Game.
Zurück zu Teil Drei: Effekte und Gesamtarrangement
Ich weiß… kein Mashup – aber was Punch Arogunz da mit dem wohl bekannten Eminem/Rihanna Instrumental gemacht hat, gefällt mir echt gut. Dass es auf Rappers.in auch echte Qualität geben kann, ist seit Gruppen wie z.B. Option B ja sowieso ein offenes Geheimnis, aber das hier überrascht mich doch jedes mal aufs Neue:
